About Me
ABOUT ME / DR RUTH PORTHER
I have post-graduate qualifications in Palliative Care, Geriatrics and Counselling and have over 10 years experience working in the NHS. I have looked after hundreds of people who have died with Dementia and other chronic conditions which is the focus of my work.
I have always been the doctor who gravitated towards seeing the 80-year-old lady admitted to the emergency department with a fall at 2am, and am often protective of anyone under my care likely entering the last stages of life- taking on complex conversations with their families and making timely decisions about their treatment and care.
I have personal experience of family members living with Dementia and have seen the challenges they have faced first hand- living in a world not made for them and that does not cater to their needs.
My mission is to:
Educate
Healthcare Professionals on the importance of early Dementia diagnosis and recognition of dying
Empower
Patients and carers with the knowledge they need to navigate complex systems and take ownership of their healthcare journey
Create
Spaces for connection over shared experiences of death and dying and to facilitate innovation to solve problems in health and social care
Collaborate
With businesses, policy-makers and researchers across sectors to deliver change
